Firefox/Thunderbird Not Auto-Upgrading in Windows Vista
It looks like the auto-update feature in Mozilla's Firefox browser and Thunderbird email client is not working properly when installed in Microsoft Windows Vista. The download appears to start and complete as expected. However, the upgrade process itself fails. Firefox or Thunderbird will then download another upgrade copy and re-attempt to upgrade with the same failure. I have not seen this problem under Mac OS X or Linux.
The solution is to download a fresh copy of Firefox or Thunderbird and run the installer manually.

Thanks for the tip regarding
Thanks for the tip regarding updating Thunderbird on Vista. I have an Acer with a built-in orbicam, and tried the disabling trick, and it worked. Prior to that, I had tried to uninstall Thunderbird, then re-install, then clean the registry all which had failed.
LOL - who know the cam would be a cause of conflict! It wasn't an issue when I first installed Thunderbird.
I had a friend call with the
I had a friend call with the Thunderbird 2.0.0.9 update install failing - then the full load also failing.
Found this on the web: Kill Quickcam10.exe using the task manager.
Then the install worked fine. Never would have guessed this in a million years!

THANKS SO MUCH! I NEVER would have figured out that my Quick Cam software was blocking the installation. What the h*ll is that about?!?! But it worked! Turn off the Quick Cam software and the problem is solved and the installation works! Bravo to whoever figured that out! I can't thank you enough. Hooray for google and the internet and information sharing....

Beautiful! This worked for me as well! I also tried a lot of the apps that were open not thinking it would be the quickcam that was blocking this install.
Thanks again!

Wow, that's insane. I tried all the other advice on this page and none of it worked. I checked my process list and I have orbicam.exe, not quickcam.exe, but I disabled it anyway to see if there was a similar issue. It worked.
Thanks for the help!

Hey i got a vista and IE or firefox won't work. I open it and firefox opens but the firefox and ie browsers are blank. and it says done loading.
Just a note that may help
Just a note that may help the frustrated. You have to start Thunderbird twice with Admin privs. Once to get the update and once to install it.

Also, you can run
Also, you can run thunderbird as Administrator to install the update :)
René: Yes, one needs
René: Yes, one needs Administrative privileges to install. But, that is not the issue. The update did not run even as administrator. The Firefox side of the issue seems to have been fixed in the 2.0.0.1 update since the 2.0.0.2 update seems to have gone through ok.
At least for Thunderbird
At least for Thunderbird running it as Admin works:
-Run Thunderbird as admin, check for updates and choose 'Later' at the end of the update
-Close Thunderbird
-Start Thunderbird as admin again, Thunderbird updater will run and update Thunderbird to the new version; close Thunderbird again
-Start Thunderbird normally and it's still the new version
Sorry to say this but it
Sorry to say this but it doesn't work. Even when TB starts with admin the updater.exe doesn't get the same privileges.
Just worked perfectly well
Just worked perfectly well for me, I updated TB from 1.5.0.9 to 1.5.0.10 using the Admin trick above.
That had been bugging me for a little while, so thanks to the guy who posted it.
