How To Install MySQL or PostgreSQL on Microsoft Windows

The two best known Open Source relational database products are MySQL and PostgreSQL. We generally associate both databases with Linux (the "M" in LAMP is MySQL). However, both products can also be installed and run on Microsoft Windows. Microsoft's Port 25 site commissioned two How-To papers that gives you step-by-step instructions on installing these two SQL database server products on Windows. You can find and download the PDF files from the links to Microsoft's Port 25 site below...

MySQL on Windows: Configuration & Install

PostgreSQL on Windows: A Primer

Hi there I have now tried in

Hi there
I have now tried in excess of 100 times to install postgres 8.1 on my new computer running Vista Home Premium - I simply cannot get is installed (I already have it installed and use it on an older XP machine!!!)

If I install it and let postgres create the user account then the user account is not visible to Vista !!! but it is listed in the "Users" in the "C" drive

Postgres does not come up as a service on booting up !!

If I install with having first set up a user account with non administrative powers it installs fine, but does not come up as a service and I can't log on as that user, it simply logs on and off again instantaneously

If i alter the powers to admin powers it comes up as a service on a boot and i can log in as that user - But i then cant use postgres as it wants a password and no matter how i try it will not accept a password

Very frustrating

Any help would be appreciated

cheers

There is no easier way to install MySQL than installing WAMP, and you get PHP, Apache, PHPMyadmin, MySQLAdministrator too!
