avast! 4 Home Edition Anti-Virus
I've been having problems with Microsoft OneCare on an PC running XP and Grisoft Free Edition on a PC running Vista. I have a 3 PC license for McAfee but it (like Norton AntiVirus) seems awfully heavy Moreover, McAfee insists on putting up all kinds of useless and annoying status messages. So, I decided to try the free...
So far it seems relatively lightweight. But, why does it insist on placing two icons on the status bar? Isn't one enough? And, what is it with the spoken status announcements? I think I need to keep looking around for a satisfactory free or fee anti-virus product.

One icon is for showing
One icon is for showing status, and the other is for resident monitoring.
avast! is one of the very few really antivirus programs that offer real-time protection for home PC security. Czech guys did a great job! AVG and Avira seem to be the only competitors. Finding a full-featured free antivirus is tough these days, most of the so-called "free" programs are either time-limited trials, or simply on-demand scanners without real-time monitoring. To my mind, avast! has the best interface of all free AV's available for personal PC security.
No don't do that, I use
No don't do that, I use Avast as well and I think it's the best anti-virus out there for free or pay.
1.) You can merge the two icons together by right clicking on the non-main icon, the VRDB icon, and selecting merge with main Avast Icon.
2.) For your other annoyance, right click on the main avast icon, click on program settings. Then click on Sounds, then tic the checkbox that says disable Avast sounds.
Then you're all good!
I use Vista as well and I've tested all available anti-virus solutions and I keep reinstalling Avast b/c it works so well.
Thanks for the feedback and
Thanks for the feedback and advice, Matt. I'll check it out and keep trying it for a while.
