You might be surprised about what you learn about your own systems. I noted that the servers I use have dual 1000 watt power supplies. One estimate I read about desktop PCs said that a desktop with a 200 watt power supply and a CRT (vs. a lower power LCD) display costs about $15 per month in power if it is on 24x7. So, my servers might cost $150/month to run 24x7. Now multiply that by a 100 servers, and you might understand why I am interested in areas such as virtualization technology and green technology.
