Getting Java to Install in Windows Vista

Like many Vista testers, one of the first things I did after installing Vista on a test PC (a mandatory clean install in the early beta days) was to install a bunch of must-have free applications: Macromedia/Adobe Flash, Adobe Acrobat, Firefox, Thunderbird, and a bunch of other apps. Although Java isn't an app, there are a number of apps that require the Java Runtime to work. Unfortunately, it looked to me like JRE/JDK5 simply wouldn't install. I didn't get it. Fortunately, Chet Haase does and explains the Vista/Java relationship in his blog:

Java on Vista: Yes, it Works

It turns out that the trick is to download and install Java SE 6 (currently in beta) found at:

https://jdk6.dev.java.net/

i cant get vista to work for

i cant get vista to work for me when i try playing a java game it says:

Java will not download on my laptop with Vista. It starts and then states I already have it installed, do I want to reinstall. I select yes because no just ends it. Yes gets me a message that the program has to be installed to reinstall. I have run RegTool, Disk Clean (etc.)did defrag, did search for all "pieces" of Java and deleted, attempted different versions, viewed Tools/Internet Options/Advanced and ther is no Java in the list as there should be and have been working on this a WEEK and with Microsoft who said this is a Java issue but gave me the advice on what I have completed. Still won't download.

Hi Chris,
Probably you are running your applications from a non-administrative account. Next time for opening your applications using java, right click on the icon and select "Run as administrator". Enter the password when prompted. That should work fine.
