Snackr: Adobe AIR based RSS Scrolling Ticker

snackr
Snackr is an Adobe AIR based scrolling ticker that displays RSS feed information. I created an OPML file from my Microsoft Live Personalized Experience Page (Microsoft really needs to come up with better product names :-) and fed it into Snackr after installing it.

I tested it on two PCs running Windows Vista (will test it on my Macs next). It seemed to drag my Dell Latitude D620 Core 2 Duo notebook down to the ground performance-wise. However, my much older and slower eMachine desktop PC with an old style single core Athlon 3200+ ran just fine with it running. Both systems have 2GB RAM. The desktop has a 1GB ReadyBoost USB flash drive installed too. However, I think the hard drives might be the bigger factor.

I'm going to uninstall it from the notebook but will probably leave it on for a while on the desktop PC.

I have a similar program I developed with a higher backend emphasis to push news and associated content that the user would prefer.

Perhaps you could take a look at the alpha and give it a review.

The constant scrolling on the desktop can be annoying, no matter on which side of the screen it happens. However, I found it useful to run during the daily hours I spend exclusively for browsing or reading news. There are new RSS feeds that I subscribe to every once in a while, and it is not possible to keep abreast with all the updates in all these feeds. By allowing Snackr’s deliberate distraction, I get an idea about what is going on in those sites. If a headline catches my eye, I see the description, and if my interest is sustained, view the complete post.
