Every Tuesday, Apple’s iTunes Store offers a new set of three free songs. Starbucks offers new free song on iTunes each week too. And, the song is different from the three Apple offers. CNET reported that you can now add a free premium apps to the list.
Starbucks serves up free iPhone apps
There’s a “Pick of the Week” card for apps at Starbucks cash registers just as there is one for the weekly free song. The pick of the week song can also be obtained by pointing an iPhone’s browser at the Starbucks Digital Network (starbucks.yahoo.com). Tapping on the Pick of the Week link launches the iTunes app and automatically fills out the redeem code. However, downloading over Starbucks’ free WiFi may not be fast enough if you are in a rush.
I’d like Starbucks to integrate this process with their iOS app. Here’s how I see it working: When you pay for something using the Starbucks app on an iPhone, the app brings the week’s redeem codes for the free song and free app. The person can then rush off and apply the redeem code(s) later. This would provide the same effect as the paper card for those who have an iPhone. And, it would be a slightly greener solution since fewer cards would be needed each week.
Bad news for Windows Phone fans (of which I am one). Seattle Times reported Gartners worldwide smartphone sales estimates and things look bleak for Microsoft Windows Phone. It is in 6th place behind Bada with a 1.6% marketshare (Bada is at 1.9%) and just above “Other” (1%).
Sales of Windows Phone drop in second quarter
Note, however that Gartner’s ranking are different from other recent rankings. Gartner has Nokia’s Symbian ranked at #2. Other marketshare estimates have Symbian’s marketshare with an estimate quite a bit lower than 22.1%
The Android Market update and major facelift was announced a month ago. That’s so long ago that I completely forgot about it. Well, the update finally hit my aging Nexus One tonight. Definitely looks a lot nicer than the original Android Market app.
